    Well, yes - it’s required!

The UK is an English speaking country and IELTS is a preliminary requirement to get an admit. However, if you are okey to study with some of the tier-2 universities, you can get a waiver based on your senior secondary school English marks. If you have got more than 60–65 in 12th English, you can get to study without any exam. This waiver option is only for Indian students, other nationalities need to look into their country specific entry requirements.

So, yes - it’s not necessary but not every university would accept you without IELTS. Even some Russel group universities would waive off IELTS i.e. University of Liverpool, Queen’s university of Belfast, etc.

If you have got less score in 12th English or studied a diploma, you still have a good chance to study without IELTS. Some universities accept MOI ( Medium of Instruction) letter such as the Bangor university. And some universities would have their in-house language assessment test i.e. Northumbria university, University of South Wales, etc.

If you are still not eligible then you should aspire for foundation or Pte-sessional courses. Most universities offer per-sessional course for the students who are not meeting a language requirements directly. Based on your language proficiency, you can join 4 weeks or 8 weeks per-sessional English and that would make you enter into the specific masters or bachelors.
