How important is IELTS in UK college applications?

The IELTS assesses the English language proficiency of students applying to UK universities, testing reading, writing, speaking and listening ability across a range of different examinations.

Candidates can choose to study either an academic (education purposes) or general test (visa purposes) and they will be scored on a 9-band scale. The listening and speaking exams are the same for both types of test, but the reading and writing components are different.
